Masterpiece Carving! Museum quality Sculpture!
David Ruben Piqtoukun is honoured for his inventiveness in his choice of materials and his narrative vision.
He attributes his vision to Dr. Allan Gonor who suggested to him in 1974, that "he collect stories and introduce them into his carvings".
David compiled ancestral stories which have served as a source for his work.
The human face has been a rich and compelling subject in art since time immemorial.
The face captures the essence of a person's character and also allows the exploration of abstract concepts of what it is to be human.
David's THE EYES HAVE IT teeters on the edge of being a face or a mask!
The ornamental bird head is reminiscent of a figurehead on a ship, or the crest on a Roman soldier's helmut.
What story is this face telling us?
The staring eyes are not quite symmetric.
Is the message that we must look in all directions to comprehend our circumstances?
The Eyes (like many Piqtoukan pieces) is a once in a lifetime sculpture.
