Emily Illuitok was renowned for her charming carvings of Inuit life and Arctic wildlife
In fact, Pope Benedict XVI was given a gift carved by Emily, such was her International reputation.
These scenes that depict early Inuit life, are essential to the documentation of the modern history of the Inuit.
Emily's art reflected her personal survival in the bitter cold of the Canadian Arctic.
THE GOLDEN YEARS probably depicts a typical day in Emily's life.
This is an emotional sculpture
An older fragile woman is preparing to eat with her male companion.
Her shawl/coat drapes around her narrow hunched shoulders.
Perhaps this is her son who is looking after he
Emily has carved a poignant scene that describes the shared history of these two Inuks.
One day, The Golden Years could easily find its way into an Art Museum like the WAG..
